Disability Compensation Filing Process
The VA disability compensation process involves several steps, from preparing your documents to receiving a final decision. Submitting a fully developed claim with all necessary evidence increases your chances of a faster and favorable outcome.
Step-by-Step Filing Process
- Determine Eligibility
Ensure your condition is service-connected. You must have a current diagnosis, an in-service event or injury, and a link between the two (nexus). - Gather Supporting Evidence
Collect military records, private medical records, and any lay statements (buddy statements or personal statements). - Submit the Claim
You can file online using the VA’s online claim portal, by mail, or with the help of a Veterans Service Organization (VSO). - Attend C&P Exams
If scheduled, attend your Compensation & Pension exam(s). These help the VA determine the severity and connection of your condition. - Wait for Decision
The VA will review all submitted evidence and exam results. They will then issue a decision letter explaining your rating and any back pay.
